Aziinger has always been known as a good golfer, evidenced by his 12 wins on the PGA Tour and a PGA Championship title. However, it was his role as captain of the 2008 Ryder Cup team that that sealed his legacy in the golf world. Aziinger led the team to a victory over the Europeans and returned the Cup to U.S. soil for the first time since 1999.
Azinger details the experiences of the 2008 Ryder Cup and the strategy he employed in his book, Cracking the Code: The Winning Ryder Cup Strategy: Make it Work for You. Inspired by team-building techniques used by Navy SEALS, Azinger divided the 12-man team into small groups. He then placed golfers based on their personality types rather than their golf games. The relationships among teammates created an atmosphere where Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink, Kenny Perry and the other U.S. golfers could perform at their highest levels. Besides working for the Ryder Cup, these same team-building techniques apply to business and beyond, which Azinger discusses during his presentation.
While the Ryder Cup certainly provided a challenge to Azinger, nothing compared to the challenge he faced when he was diagnosed 1993 with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He was at the top of his golf game when a tumor was found in his right shoulder. After six months of chemo and five weeks of radiation, Azinger went into remission and returned to golf, eventually winning the 2000 Sony Open in Hawaii. Azinger chronicled his battles with cancer in his book Zinger. Azinger is also a devout Christian.
In addition to speaking engagements, Azinger is available for corporate and charity golf outings.
