Butch Lumpkin Is An Inspiration to All

I just returned last week from an event in the Midwest that I provide athletes for each year. This year’s lineup included football Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett and baseball Hall of Famer Andre Dawson. And while both did a great job and received rave reviews, the person who stole the show was someone named Butch Lumpkin.

Lumpkin wasn’t a professional athlete and didn’t have the name recognition of Dorsett and Dawson, but he’s the one that left the biggest impression. You see, Lumpkin was born with virtually no arms, yet he’s a single-digit handicap golfer, plays tennis better than most and skis black diamonds. The word “can’t” isn’t in his vocabulary. ... New Zealand v. Italy Ends in Suprise 1-1 Draw

NELSPRUIT, South Africa – New Zealand could not quite pull off a win over Italy in their second Group F game on Sunday but a 1-1 draw still represented an extraordinary achievement. World champion Italy was aided by a controversial penalty against New Zealand in earning a 1-1 draw at the FIFA World Cup in Nelspruit on Sunday.”

“I think that stopped the nation,” New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert said. “It’s the most incredible result we’ve had across the board. As a football coach, it’s way above anything we’ve achieved in the history of the game. ... Read More

USA v. Slovenia World Cup: Was USA Robbed of Win? (VIDEO)

The United States overcame a two-goal deficit to force a draw against Slovenia on Friday, but the Americans may have deserved to win outright. Shortly after tying the game in the 81st minute, the U.S. had a free kick near the Slovenian goal.

Landon Donovan, who scored the first U.S. goal of the game, lobbed the ball towards the goal and teammate Maurice Edu knocked it in. A referee called the goal off, apparently because he thought the American committed a foul. ... Read More

Lance Armstrong Upset Over ‘Outside’ Digitally Altered Magazine Cover (PHOTO)

Lance Armstrong isn’t too happy with an Outside Magazine cover that digitally altered his T-shirt to bear a profane slogan that reads “38. BFD.” The number refers to Armstrong’s age and the letters are an acronym for “big [expletive] deal”.

As the cover explains in small text, the garment is “not Armstrong’s real T-shirt,” and the cyclist is not very pleased. On Twitter, he wrote that the text was Photo shopped into the image and called the stunt “lame bullshit.” He also derided the altered photo as “weak.”

Armstrong has been on the cover of Outside Magazine eight times. After this, it may be his last.

Barry Bonds Drug Test Evidence Ruled Inadmissible by Courts

The New York Times reports that a federal appeals court ruled on Friday that prosecutors will be barred from using positive drug tests and doping calendars in the perjury case of Barry Bonds, the major leagues’ career home run leader, significantly hurting the government’s case against him. The appeals court, in a 2-to-1 ruling, affirmed a lower court decision that said the government could not authenticate the evidence and directly tie it to Bonds without the testimony of his former trainer.

The appeals court, in a 2-to-1 ruling, affirmed a lower court decision that said the government could not authenticate the evidence and directly tie it to Bonds without the testimony of his former trainer Greg Anderson. Anderson has been jailed several times in the past five years for refusing to testify about substances he gave Bonds. ... Read More

Who Are The Top St. Louis Sports Speakers

Every town has its share of favorite sports speakers. Denver has John Elway. Dallas has Roger Staubach. But few cities can boast the number of well-known sports speakers as St. Louis. Let’s take a look at a few of my favorites…

Ozzie Smith…Affectionately known as “The Wizard” for his magical plays at shortstop, Ozzie Smith is considered one of the top shortstops of all-time. During his 19 years in the Majors, Smith was a 15-time All Star and 13-time Gold Glove winner. He helped lead the Cardinals to the 1982 World Series title and was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002.

Lou Brock…Best known for his base-stealing prowess, Lou Brock was one of baseball’s most exciting players during his era. Brock helped lead the Cardinals to National League pennants in 1964, 1967 and 1968 and to World Series championships in 1964 and 1967, a year in which he also became the first player to steal 50 bases and hit 20 home runs in the same season. Brock’s 938 stolen bases rank only second to Rickey Henderson’s 1,406 on the all-time list.

Bob Gibson…Few pitchers instilled fear in opposing hitters like Bob Gibson. Ask any old-timer which pitcher he feared most and chances are good that Gibson will be among the ones mentioned. In 17 seasons with the Cardinals, Gibson went 251-174 with a 2.91 ERA. As impressive as those numbers are, arguably his most impressive feat occurred in 1969 when he threw 28 complete games, something unheard of in today’s game.

Kurt Warner…Few football players can boast a rags to riches story like Kurt Warner, who went from stocking shelves at a grocery store to Arena League quarterback to Super Bowl champion. Warner was a five-time All-Pro, was named AP NFL MVP in 1999 and 2001 and was named mvp of Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000 after leading the Rams to a 23-16 victory over the Tennessee Titans.

Others notable sports speakers who either reside in St. Louis or maintain close ties include sportscasters Bob Costas and Joe Buck, baseball Hall of Famer Whitey Herzog and catcher Mike Matheny and football players DeMarco Farr and Marshall Faulk.
