One of the greatest female soccer players ever, Mia Hamm played an integral role in popularizing the sport in the United States. As a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team from 1987-2004, Hamm won two FIFA World Cups in 1991 and 1999 and two Olympic gold medals in 1996 and 2004. Her 158 goals during international competition were the most-ever by a male or female at the time of Hamm’s retirement in 2004 (the mark was later broken by Abby Wambach). Hamm ranked first all-time as of 2021 among U.S. national team members in career assists with 144 and third in international caps with 276.
One of the most celebrated women’s soccer players ever, Hamm two-times was named FIFA World Player of the Year and five times U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year. She won three ESPY’s, including Female Athlete of the year and Soccer Player of the Year, and was twice named Female Athlete of the Year by the Women’s Sports Foundation. Hamm has additionally been inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, Texas Sports Hall of Fame, Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, North Carolina Soccer Hall of Fame and National Women’s Hall of Fame. She was also the first female inductee of the World Football Hall of Fame. In 2004, Hamm and former teammate Michele Akers were named to the FIFA 100, which honored the greatest 125 living soccer players from around the world, and were the only two Americans and women on the list.
In addition to representing the United States, Hamm played for the Washington Freedom of the Women’s United Soccer Association from 2001-2003. Born on March 17, 1972 in Selma, Alabama, Hamm played collegiately at the University of North Carolina, where she helped lead the Tar Heels to four straight NCAA Division I titles. Hamm was honored as the ACC Female Athlete of the Year twice and ACC Player of the Year three times. In 2003, Hamm and basketball great Michael Jordan were named by the ACC as the Greatest Male and Female Athletes of the conference’s first half century. In 2000, Hamm authored the book “Go for the Goal: A Champion’s Guide to Winning in Soccer and Life”. One of the most country’s most recognizable female athletes, Hamm has served as spokesperson for many top brands, including Nike, Gatorade, Pepsi and Nabisco. She appeared on the cover of a Wheaties box in 1999 and was featured by Nintendo in the 2000 video game “Mia Hamm Soccer 64”. She also appeared on the magazine covers of “People”, “Time” and “Sports Illustrated”. In 2014, Hamm became a co-owner of Los Angeles FC of Major League Soccer. She is married to former baseball star Nomar Garciaparra.
