Retired NFL Safety, Brian Dawkins, known for his unique crawling and gyrating entrance onto the field, pleased the fans in Philadelphia one more time with his signature entrance into Lincoln Financial Field last Sunday night.
During a Sunday night football game half-time ceremony on Sept. 30, the Eagles retired Dawkins number 20 jersey before the team went on to beat the New York Giants 19-17.
Dawkins told the crowd, “This is a tremendous honor.” I will always be an Eagle in my heart and I will always, always look to represent this organization and you guys to the best of my abilities.”
Before retiring from the NFL, Dawkins spent his final three years as a Denver Bronco, but after 13 seasons with Philadelphia, Dawkins will always be remembered as a Philadelphia Eagle by fans.
Eagles owner, Jeffrey Lurie, told Dawkins that No. 20 was “yours and ours for good.”
“What Brian meant to this team and this city, it doesn’t have a number on it,” Laurie said. “That part isn’t going on the wall because that part is going in our hearts and the memories. Every one of us who saw him play, we remember he was the strong, passionate heartbeat of our team.”
“There’s some great names (retired by the team: (Steve) Van Buren. (Chuck) Bednarik. Reggie (White). But there was never any doubt (Dawkins’) name belonged right up there with them. Brian put his heart and soul into everything he does. And it’s a big heart and a big soul. But what Brian meant to this team and this city doesn’t have a number on it. That part isn’t going on the wall. That part is in our hearts.”
