ST. JOSEPH, MO. — Dave Dravecky’s message was one of hope, faith, endurance and perseverance as the former San Francisco Giant’s pitcher and cancer survivor gave an inspirational speech at the St. Joseph Christian School fundraiser held on Thursday, October 10, in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Draveck’y story is well documented. His time with the San Francisco Giants was one of triumph, tragedy and redemption and then despair. At the height of his pitching career, Dravecky discovered he had a cancerous tumor in his pitching shoulder. Doctors told Dravecky that he would never pitch again, but 10 months later he defied the odds and was pitching again, but it didn’t last long. Five day later, while pitching in the 6th inning, his left arm snapped in half. After the break and the reoccurence of the cancer, Dravecky’s left arm was amputated.
Today Dravecky is a motivational speaker and continues to spreads his message. “It’s not what you do that matters, it’s who you are,” Dravecky says. “And when you discover who you are, it’s really about relationships…”
