LAS VEGAS, NV. – English car racer and two time Indy 500 winner, Dan Wheldon, was tragically killed today after a fiery crash involving 15 cars early in the IZOD IndyCar World Championships at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The accident resulted in a 15 car crash on lap 13 where Wheldon was critically injured and later passed away at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas.
IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said:
“IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners, have decided to end the race. In honor of Dan Wheldon, the drivers have decided to do a five-lap salute to in his honor.”
