Barry Larkin is a retired Major League Baseball shortstop who played his entire 19-year career for the Cincinnati Reds from 1986-2004. A member of the Baseball Hall of Fame class of 2012, Larkin tallied a batting average of .295 to go along with 2,340 hits, 960 RBI and 198 home runs. Larkin earned 12 trips to the annual All-Star Game and was a nine-time Silver Slugger winner, including five straight seasons between 1988-1992. His defensive prowess was also rewarded via three straight Gold Glove Awards from 1994-1996.
Larkin became a World Series champion in 1990, leading the Reds to a championship behind a .353 batting average in the Fall Classic. In 1995, he won the N.L. MVP award with a .319 batting average and 51 stolen bases. His jersey #11 has been retired by the Reds and he is a member of Cincinnati’s Hall of Fame. In 1993, he won the Roberto Clemente Award for his sportsmanship, community service and on-field talents.
After retiring, Larkin worked as an analyst for the MLB Network and ESPN and in the front office of the Washington Nationals. He also traveled to numerous foreign countries as part of the U.S. State Department’s SportsUnited Sports Envoy initiative, which aims to introduce baseball to youth populations in underserved parts of the world.
