Bill O’Brien has served as head coach of the Houston Texans since 2014 and led the Texans to AFC South titles in two of his first three seasons. Before Houston, O’Brien was head coach at Penn State from 2012-2013, where in his first season he coached the Nittany Lions to an 8-4 record. The eight wins were the most-ever in school history by a head coach in his first year. As a result of his efforts, O’Brien was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year, AT&T-ESPN Coach of the Year and was the recipient of the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award and Maxwell Award. In his second year at Penn State, O’Brien led the team to a 7-5 record.
Prior to Penn State, O’Brien served as an assistant coach for a number of years. His first coaching job was coaching tight ends at Brown followed by stops at Georgia Tech, Maryland, Duke and the New England Patriots, where he served under Bill Belichick as an offensive assistant, wide receivers coach, quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. O’Brien grew up in Andover, Massachusetts and went to high school at St. John’s Preparatory School. He attended college at Brown University, where he played football from 1990-1992 as a linebacker and defensive end.
