Billy Sims is a retired running back who played in the NFL for the Detroit Lions from 1980-1984 and won the Heisman Trophy in 1978 while at the University of Oklahoma. During his time at Oklahoma, Sims was a two-time consensus All-American and held the record for most rushing yards in a season until it was broken in 2004 by Adrian Peterson. In addition to winning the Heisman Trophy, he also was named the AP and UPI Player of the Year and won the Davey O’Brien Memorial Trophy, Walter Camp Award and Harley Award the same year. He was inducted into the College Hall of Fame in 1995.

Sims was selected by Detroit with the 1st overall pick in the 1980 NFL Draft. In his first season, he became the first player in NFL history to record three touchdowns in his first game and was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. During his five seasons in the league, he was a three-time Pro Bowl selection, first-team All-Pro in 1981 and second-team All-Pro in 1980. Sims’ career ended prematurely due to a knee injury he suffered in 1984. Since retirement, Sims has been involved with the Billy Sims Barbecue franchise.
