Bobby Richardson is a former MLB second baseman who spent the entirety of his 12-year career from 1955-1966 with the New York Yankees. Richardson was named an All-Star eight times and captured three World Series titles with the Yankees in 1958, 1961 and 1962. In his entire career, Richardson struck out in less than five percent of his at-bats.
The Yankees advanced to the World Series in 1960 and, although they eventually lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates in seven games, Richardson won MVP honors, hitting .367 with 12 RBI. Richardson still remains the only World Series MVP to be chosen from the losing team. Richardson was awarded five consecutive Gold Gloves for his superb defense between 1962-1966 and was the last New York second baseman to win a Gold Glove until Robinson Cano won the honor in 2010.
After his playing days, Richardson turned to coaching, notably leading the South Carolina Gamecocks baseball team from 1970-1976. During that time, South Carolina posted a 221-92-1 record, made three NCAA Tournaments and advanced to the College World Series in 1975. Richardson in 1963 was given the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award, recognizing his character both on the baseball field and away from it. He has been active throughout the years with various Christian organizations, including Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), American Tract Society and Billy Graham Crusades.
