Dan Gable won a gold medal in freestyle wrestling at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany. During the competition, Gable was victorious in all six of his matches and did not give up a point. He also won a gold medal at the Pan American Games and the World Championships in 1971 at the Tbilsi Tournament in 1972. Gable attended Iowa State University from 1967-1970 and competed in folkstyle wrestling. He he was a two-time national champion, three-time Big Eight champion and three-time All-American. Gable’s collegiate wrestling record was 117-1, his only loss was to the University of Washington’s Larry Owings.

After retiring from competition, Gable served as head coach at Iowa from 1976-1997. During his time in Iowa City, he coached 45 national champions, 12 Olympians, 106 Big Ten champions and 21 conference champions in route to helping the Hawkeyes to 15 NCAA championships and 21 Big Ten Conference titles. His overall college coaching record was 355-21-5. Gable was also head coach of three United States Olympic teams and six world teams. Gable is a member of the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame and United World Wrestling Hall of Fame. Gable was born on October 25, 1948 in Waterloo, Iowa.
