One of the most popular players in Seattle Mariners history and considered one of the top designated hitters of all-time, Edgar Martinez spent his entire MLB career from 1987-2004 playing in Seattle. Over the course of his illustrious 18 years in the league, Martinez was a seven-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger Award winner. He led the American League in RBI in 2000 and was its batting champion in 1992 and 1995. He five times won the Outstanding Designated Hitter Award, which was renamed in his honor the Edgar Martinez Award in 2004. In total for his career, Martinez recorded a batting average of .312 with 309 homers and 1,261 RBI. Martinez had his jersey #11 retired by Seattle in 2017 and is a member of the Mariners Hall of Fame. He became a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019.
Born on January 2, 1963 in New York City, Martinez was raised in Puerto Rico. He signed with the Mariners in 1982 and made his debut in the majors for Seattle on September 12, 1987. After his playing days ended, Martinez returned to the field as the Mariners’ hitting coach from 2015-2018 before accepting the role as a hitting advisor. A staple in the Seattle community, Martinez has supported many local organizations, including Seattle Children’s Hospital, Make A-Wish, United Way, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy among others. In 2004, he received the Roberto Clemente Award for his play on the field and involvement in the community and in 2007 was honored with induction into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame.
