Mark Martin is a former NASCAR driver who enjoyed great success on the Cup Series and Xfinity Series circuits. In the Cup Series, Martin competed in 882 races over 31 years, winning 40 times with 453 top 10 finishes. In the Xfinity Series, Martin competed in 236 races, winning 49 of them with 152 top 10 finishes. His wins total in the Xfinity Series ranks second all-time to Kyle Busch. In total, Martin competed in more than 1,000 NASCAR races, just the third driver ever (along with Michael Waltrip and Richard Petty) to achieve the feat. Martin became a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame America in 2015 and NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2017. In 1998, he was named one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers.
Although Martin never won a NASCAR Cup Series championship, he came close on multiple occasions, finishing second five times in 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2009. His first Cup Series victory came in 1989 at that year’s AC Delco 500 and Martin’s most successful season in terms of wins was in 1998 when he recorded seven first place finishes. During his career, Martin won the Southern 500 (1993, 2009), Coca-Cola 600 (2002), Winston 500 (1995, 1997), Bud Shootout (1999) and Nextel All-Star Challenge (1998, 2005). He also won the International Race of Champions (IROC) Championship five times, the most ever. Martin was born on January 9, 1959 in Batesville, Arkansas and started racing on dirt tracks before competing in ASA races. Martin has owned several car dealerships in Arkansas and authored a book titled “Strength Training for Performance Driving”.
