One of Canada’s best-known sportscasters, Ron MacLean has served as the co-host of the popular television show “Hockey Night in Canada” for over 30 years. He also co-hosted “Coach’s Corner” with the legendary Don Cherry until 2019. MacLean has won 10 Gemini Awards (the Canadian television equivalent of the Emmys) for his broadcasting over the years, including four as Best Host or Interviewer in a Sports Program or Sportscast with “Hockey Night in Canada” and six as Best Sportscaster/Anchor for his work with CBC’s coverage of the NHL and Olympics. He has also twice been named the recipient of the George Gross Award which recognizes excellence in sports broadcasting.
Maclean got his start in broadcasting at CKRD Radio in Red Deer, Alberta in 1978 before moving to Calgary in 1984 to host the tv broadcasts of the Calgary Flames on CFAC. In 1986, he was hired as the host of “Hockey Night in Canada’s” broadcasts of the Toronto Maple Leafs. A year later in 1987, he assumed national hosting duties of “Hockey Night in Canada”. In addition to hockey, MacLean has worked on CBC’s telecasts of numerous Olympics, IAAF World Championships, Queen’s Plate and the Commonwealth Games. Maclean has also authored a couple of books, including “Hockey Towns: Untold Stories from the Heart of Canada” and “Cornered”. In 2016, MacLean was awarded a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. He also was honored with induction into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and Oakville Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
