Shawn Thornton is a former NHL right winger who played from 2002 – 2017 for the Chicago Blackhawks, Anaheim Ducks, Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers. From 2007-2014, Thornton played with the Bruins, where he earned a reputation as an enforcer. Thornton was a two-time Stanley Cup winner, capturing a championship with Anaheim in 2007 and later with Boston in 2011. During the Bruins’ 2010-11 Stanley Cup run, Thornton produced his most statistically dominant season, scoring 10 goals with 10 assists. His +/- of 8 that season was also a career-high. From 2014-2017, Thornton moved to South Florida and finished his playing career with the Panthers. After retiring in 2017, he joined Florida’s front office as the vice president of business operations.
Thornton was born on July 23, 1977 in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. He was drafted in the 9th round of the 1995 Ontario Hockey League draft by the Peterborough Petes and made his NHL debut with the Blackhawks on November 11, 2002. Off the ice, in 2013 he established the Thornton Foundation, which helps fund research into discovering a cure for cancer and Parkinson’s disease. Thornton also had an interest in Turner’s Yard, a restaurant in Massachusetts that included former Boston pitcher Tim Wakefield as part of its ownership group.
