Thomas “Hitman” Hearns is a former professional boxer who competed from 1977-2006 and was the first boxer ever to win titles in five divisions – welterweight, light middleweight, middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight. He ended his career with a record of 61-5 and 48 knockouts.
Hearns was known for his punishing hits and recorded wins against the likes of Roberto Duran and Wilfred Benitez. He is best remembered for his matches against Marvin Hagler and two bouts against Sugar Ray Leonard – he lost the first one and the second ended in a draw. Hearns was born in Grand Junction, Tennessee before moving to Detroit, Michigan at the age of five. He enjoyed a successful amateur career and finished with a record of 155-8. He won both the Amateur Athletic Union Light Welterweight Championship and National Golden Gloves Light Welterweight Championship in 1977. That same year, Hearns turned pro under the watch of legendary trainer Emanuel Steward.
