Tony Romo spent 14 seasons playing quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys from 2003-2016. Romo originally signed with Dallas as an undrafted free agent in 2003, initially serving as a placeholder before taking over the starting quarterback job partway through the 2006 season. He was a four-time Pro Bowl pick and led the Cowboys to six appearances in the playoffs. He set numerous franchise records, including career passing yards and passing touchdowns and most 300-yard passing games. He finished his NFL career with a 97.1 career passer rating, which at the time of his retirement ranked fourth all-time in the history of the NFL behind Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Russell Wilson.
In 2007, his first full year as the Cowboys’ starter, Romo led the team to a 13-3 record, throwing a career-high 36 touchdowns. From 2011-2013, Romo put together impressive consecutive seasons, throwing for at least 28 touchdowns during each campaign while setting a career-best in passing yards for the 2012 season with 4,903. In 2014, he established career-highs in passer rating (113.2) and completion percentage (69.9) while leading the league in both categories.
Born on April 21, 1980, Romo played college football at Eastern Illinois, where he three times quarterbacked the Panthers to the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoffs. He was a three-time All-American and three-time Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Player of the Year. Romo was the recipient of the Walter Payton Award in 2002 as the top offensive player in the NCAA Division I Football Subdivision and became a member of the school’s Hall of Fame in 2009. That same year, Eastern Illinois retired his jersey #17, the first football player in school history to be so honored. After his playing days, Romo launched a successful broadcast career in 2017 with CBS Sports, working in the booth with Jim Nantz as the network’s lead analyst for NFL games. In 2020, Romo became the highest-paid NFL analyst ever after he signed a long-term deal with the network.
