Ty Detmer played quarterback in the NFL from 1992-2005 with the Green Bay Packers (1992-1995), Philadelphia Eagles (1996-1997), San Francisco 49ers (1998), Cleveland Browns (1999-2000), Detroit Lions (2001-2003) and Atlanta Falcons (2004-2005). Detmer served as backup to Hall of Famer Brett Favre during his tenure with the Packers but upon joining Philadelphia, took over the starting job and led the Eagles a 7-4 record while throwing for 2,911 yards and 15 scores. In total, he played in 54 NFL games, throwing for 6,351 yards and 34 touchdowns.
Prior to the NFL, Detmer enjoyed a standout collegiate career at Brigham Young from 1987-1991. As a junior in 1990, Detmer captured the Heisman Trophy behind a 5,188 yard passing and 42 touchdown effort, additionally winning Player of the Year honors from United Press International. He was a two-time consensus All-American in 1990 and 1991 and also won the Davey O’Brien Award both years as the nation’s top quarterback. In 1991 as a senior, Detmer finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting but won that year’s Sammy Baugh Trophy. In 2012, he became a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
After his playing days, Detmer turned to coaching. He served as head coach at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Austin, Texas from 2009-2015 and later returned to his alma mater, BYU, working as the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2016 and 2017. Detmer was born on October 30, 1967 in San Marcos, Texas. He attended Southwest High School where he was named the Texas Player of the Year during his senior season.
