WILMINGTON, N.C. — Former NC State basketball legend and NBA star, David Thompson, was the keynote speaker on November 21, at the annual dinner fundraiser for the Community Boys & Girls Club in Wilmington, N.C. Before the actual event took place, Thompson held a news conference where he spoke about the issues of gang violence in the New Hanover County area and the specific need for after-school programs and a safe place for youth. Thompson continued speaking about gang violence during his keynote speech.
“Once you have that platform of being an athlete, I think it’s very important that you take up some worthy causes,” Thompson said. “This is a problem that exists and that often goes overlooked. To be able to speak at this event, I was all for it. Anytime you’re able to do something to help impact kids’ and families’ lives, I’m in.”
Thompson, was considered by many as the greatest basketball player in Wolfpack history. He was a three-time ACC Player of the Year and two-time AP College Player of the Year. He went on to star in the NBA for the Denver Nuggets (1975-82) and Seattle Supersonics (1982-84). Thompson’s life took a turn for the worse after basketball, but with the help of his pastor, he was able to put his life back in order. “I continue to talk with kids today about many of the things that I faced when I was playing. I try to talk to them about making the good life choices, the dangers of drugs and alcohol, the value of staying in school and getting an education.”
