THESTAR.COM – Retired NHL Hall of Famer and Kingston Frontenacs general manager, Doug Gilmour offered his retired Maple Leafs No. 93 to Mitch Marner. An article on Friday, November 25, 2016 in TheStar.com details how the two players met at an autograph signing in the summer and how a lot of fans asked Gilmour if he was going to let it go so Marner could wear it. According to TheStar.com article, Gilmour got to talking to Mitch and the first thing he said to Marner was that it was his if he wanted it:
“I got to talking to Mitch and the first thing I said, hey, it’s yours if you want it.”
Marner was a huge fan of Gilmour growing up and wore the 93 with the London Knights after going on to stardom in the OHL, but no NHL player has worn it since it was “lifted to the rafters” when the number was retired in a ceremony in January, 2009 at the Air Canada Centre.
Marner recalled seeing Gilmore at the signing event in the summer and how he spoke to Gilmore about his number 93:
“I was kind of (in awe), I went over and shook his hand, and we started talking. One of the first things he said, ‘are you 93 this season?,’ and I said, ‘nah, I think I’m going in a different direction with that.’ But he said, hey, no problem wearing it. That was a special feeling for me . . . I grew up a huge fan of him and the way he played.”
Doug Gilmour is a retired National Hockey League (NHL) player and the current general manager of the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Gilmour won a Stanley Cup with the Flames, and the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL’s best defensive forward while with the Maple Leafs. Gilmour was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 and his uniform number 93 is retired by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
