Aimee Mullins had both legs amputated above the knees as an infant as a result of being born without fibula bones. While attending college at Georgetown University, Mullins competed for the Hoyas track & Field team and became the first double amputee to compete in an NCAA track & field event. She went on to compete at the 1996 Paralympics in Atlanta and set world records in the long jump, 100-meter and 200-meter races. In 1997, USA Track & Field named Mullins the Disabled Athlete of the Year.
After retiring from competition, Mullins spent time as a model, and appeared in such publications as Sports Illustrated for Women, Vogue, Esquire, Rolling Stone, Elle, Glamour and Harper’s Bazaar and opened a fashion show for Alexander McQueen. She was named by People Magazine as one of the “50 Most Beautiful People in the World”. Mullins has also appeared as an actress in numerous films and television shows such as Cremaster 3, World Trade Center, Five Little Pigs, Marvelous, Odd Mom Out and Netflix’s Stranger Things.
Additionally, Mullins is a sought-after motivational speaker and has spoken numerous times at the TED conference. She was named a TED All-Star and her talks have been translated into more than 40 languages. In 2011, she was named by the United States Olympic Committee as one of just two Chefs de Mission for Team USA at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Mullins was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2017.
