Al Unser, Jr. is a former race car driver and two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500. In 329 CART/IRL starts, he won 34 races along with seven pole positions. Unser in 2007 was inducted into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame and, in 2009, became a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame America.

Unser got his start in racing by competing in midget and sprint car competitions before moving to the SCCA Can-Am series, where he was crowned the 1982 champion. That same year, Unser made his racing debut on the Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) circuit, finishing as the league’s runner-up for Rookie of the Year. His first win came at the 1984 Grand Prix of Portland. In both 1986 and 1988, Unser was the victor at the IROC championships. Unser captured his first CART Indy Car World Series in 1990 behind 210 points and six first-place finishes. After back-to-back third place finishes in 1991 and 1992, he won a second CART Indy Car World Series in 1994, winning a career-high eight races while posting 225 points, also a career-best. His dominant 1994 season earned him that year’s ABC Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year honors. In 1993, Unser decided to put his skills to the test in NASCAR racing and competed in the Daytona 500.

In the 1990s, Nintendo produced a number of auto racing games featuring Unser’s likeness, including 1990’s Al Unser Jr.’s Turbo Racing and Al Unser Jr.’s Race to the Top, released in 1994. He was also referenced in a 2000 episode of The Simpsons. Unser was born on April 19, 1962 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His father is Al Unser and uncle is Bobby Unser. The family in total won a record nine Indianapolis 500s.
