Gymnast Bart Conner competed for the United States at two Summer Olympics, winning a pair of gold medals. Conner first qualified for the Olympics in 1976 and at age 17 and was the youngest American athlete participating in that year’s Summer Games held in Montreal. His Olympic career was interrupted in 1980 due to the U.S. boycott of the Games held in Moscow. However, Conner came back strong at the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles and won a pair of gold medals for the U.S., placing first in the team and parallel bars competitions. Conner is a member of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Olympic Hall of Fame, International Gymnastics Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame.
His first international competition came at the 1975 Pan American Games in Mexico City, during which he captured two bronze medals. Conner won three gold medals competing in three American Cups (1976, 1981, 1982) and also earned a gold and two bronze medals at the 1979 World Championships. Conner attended the University of Oklahoma and was an All-American gymnast for the Sooners. He also won the Nissan Award in 1981, handed to the top gymnast in the United States. He is an active supporter of the Special Olympics and has been awarded a Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor that can be presented by Congress to a civilian. Since retiring, Conner and his wife, Olympic gold medalist Nadia Comaneci, have operated the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy in Oklahoma.
