Charley Steiner has worked as the radio play-by-play voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2005. Steiner has been active in broadcasting since getting his start in Peoria, Illinois in 1969 and has held a number of high-profile broadcasting positions with ESPN, ESPN Radio and the New York Yankees. He was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2013, becoming at the time just the 17th sports broadcaster to be so honored.
Beginning in 1988 and continuing for 14 years, Steiner worked for ESPN in various capacities, including as anchor on ESPN’s SportsCenter and the lead play-by-play announcer for MLB games on ESPN Radio. In 2002, Steiner moved to the Yankees’ broadcasting booth, serving as radio play-by-play announcer. Steiner called numerous notable postseason games for the Yankees during this time, including the entirety of the 2003 and 2004 ALCS. He also hosted a show on XM Satellite Radio’s MLB Home Plate channel.
During his time at ESPN, Steiner won a Clarion award for his coverage of Mike Tyson’s trail and a CableACE award for his work on a documentary about Muhammad Ali. Steiner additionally won the United Press International award three times in 1981, 1983 and 1985 as the Best Sportscaster for New York, Connecticut and New Jersey and similarly won three Best Radio Play-By-Play Awards from the New York State Broadcasters Association in 1983, 1984 and 1987. In 2010, Steiner’s alma mater, Bradley University, awarded him an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters and named its sports communications school after Steiner in 2015.
