David Akers spent 16 years as a placekicker in the National Football League (NFL), primarily with the Philadelphia Eagles for 12 seasons from 1999-2010 but also the Washington Redskins (1998), San Francisco 49ers (2011-2012) and Detroit Lions (2013). A six-time Pro Bowl selection in 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2009-2011, Akers was similarly named first-team All-Pro in 2001 and 2011 and received second-team All-Pro honors in 2002, 2004, 2009 and 2010. A member of both the Eagles 75th Anniversary Team and their Hall of Fame, Akers additionally was named a member of the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team (second team). In his career, he converted 80.9% of his 477 field goals attempted and scored 1,721 points. Akers is the Eagles’ all-time leading scorer and holds the 49ers franchise record for longest field goal with a 63-yarder he made in 2012.
Born on December 9, 1974 in Lexington, Kentucky, Akers attended college at Louisville and signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 1997. After failing to make the Falcons’ roster and later the Panthers’ roster, he spent one season with the Washington Redskins in 1998 before Philadelphia claimed him and assigned Akers to the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe. He took over the starting job after joining the Eagles in 2000 and made his first Pro Bowl the next season in 2001. Off the football field Akers founded the David Akers Kicks for Kids Foundation, which works closely with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to develop programs that help kids who are sick as well as their families. A devout Christian, Akers in 2016 authored the book “Winning In Spite Of: Nine Biblical Principles for Turning Hard Times into Personal Growth, Increased Impact, and Abundant Life.”
