Dereck Whittenburg played basketball at North Carolina State from 1979-1983. As a senior captain at the guard position Whittenburg played an integral part in the Wolfpack’s NCAA Tournament championship run during the 1982-1983 season. Although the Wolfpack that season finished with an 8-6 record within the ACC during the regular season, the team emerged victorious in the ACC Tournament, which included defeating the defending national champion North Carolina Tar Heels.
After capturing the ACC Tournament title and thus earning an automatic spot in the NCAA Tournament, NC State went on to beat Pepperdine, UNLV, Utah, Virginia and Georgia to advance to the championship game against Houston. In the championship game, Houston high-powered offense, known as Phil Slamma Jamma and led by future Hall of Famers Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon, were the heavy favorites. However, Whittenburg and NC State had other plans with Whittenburg recording an assist on the game-winning basket by Lorenzo Charles as time expired that elevated the Wolfpack to 54-52 win and national title.
After his college days, Whittenburg served as an assistant coach throughout much of the late 1980s and 1990s, including his alma mater from 1985-1986. In 1999, he became head coach at Wagner, where he remained through 2003. The 2002-2003 season saw Wagner make the NCAA Tournament and finish the season with a 21-11 record. From 2003-2010, Whitenburg was head coach at Fordham. Off the basketball court, Whittenburg served as a producer for an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary entitled “Survive and Advance", which documented NC State’s title run.
