Earl Monroe, affectionately nicknamed “Earl the Pearl”, played in the National Baseball Association for the Baltimore Bullets (1967-1971) and New York Knicks (1971-1980). Monroe was a four-time NBA All-Star and first-team All-NBA selection in 1969. He became a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1990 and was named by the NBA to its 50th Anniversary All-Time Team. He was picked by the Bullets with the 2nd selection in the 1967 draft and, in his first season, was named first-team All-Rookie and Rookie of the Year. Monroe’s jersey was retired by both the Knicks and Washington Wizards.
In a rematch of the 1972 NBA Finals, Monroe was a member of the Knicks team along with future Hall of Fame teammates Walt Frazier, Bill Bradley, Jerry Lucas, Willis Reed, Dave DeBusschere and Phil Jackson that won a championship in 1973 after defeating the Los Angeles Lakers, 4-1. For the series, Monroe averaged 16 points with 4.2 assists per game. Monroe was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and played collegiately at Winston-Salem State. He was named Division II Player of the Year in 1967 after leading the school to a national title. In 2006, Monroe was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame.
Off the court, Monroe has been involved with a variety of business ventures. In 1985, he served as commissioner of the United States Basketball League (USBL). He has also been commissioner of the New Jersey Urban Development Corporation and owned a record label. On the philanthropic front, Monroe has supported a number of organizations, including the American Heart Association, Crown Heights Youth Collective and President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition.
