Frank Beamer served as the head football coach at Virginia Tech from 1987 – 2015. The winningest coach in school history, Beamer compiled a 238-121-2 record during his 29 years at the helm. He led the Hokies to four ACC championships and three Big East titles along with berths in 23 straight bowl games. Beamer was three times named Big East Coach of the Year (1995, 1996, 1999) and twice named ACC Coach of the Year (2004, 2005). He received the Paul “Bear” Bryant Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019 and became a member of the College Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
Beamer’s best season with the Hokies came in 1999 when he led the team to regular season record of 11-0 and spot in the Sugar Bowl where they lost to Florida State in the BCS National Championship game before finishing #2 in the Coaches Poll and #3 in the Associated Press poll. In recognition of his efforts that season, Beamer won a host of awards, including the AP Coach of the Year, AFCA Coach of the Year, Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year and Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year.
Beamer got his start in college coaching in 1972 when he took a job as a graduate assistant at the University of Maryland. After one year, Beamer was named an assistant coach at The Citadel, where he spent seven seasons. His first head coaching job was at Murray State in 1981, a position he held for six seasons before being named Virginia Tech’s head coach in 1987. A number of Beamer’s players went on to enjoy successful careers in the NFL, including Michael Vick, DeAngelo Hall, Kam Chancellor, Eddie Royal and Antonio Freeman.
