Greg Louganis is a former Olympic diver who has been hailed as one of the greatest divers of all-time and is the only male and just the second athlete ever to sweep the diving events at back-to-back Olympics. Louganis won a total of five Olympic medals – four gold and one silver. He claimed gold medals in the men’s 3-meter springboard and 10-meter platform categories at the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles. In 1988 at that year’s Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, he won the gold medal in the two events once more, cementing his place in history.
Louganis won a silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and seemed primed to be a favorite at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow but never had a chance to compete due to the U.S. boycott. 1988 would mark the final Olympics for Louganis. For his efforts, Louganis received a host of accolades, including the James E. Sullivan Award and induction into the California Sports Hall of Fame.
Aside from the Olympics, Louganis enjoyed success at various other international tournaments. At the 1983 Summer Universiade held in Edmonton, he won two gold medals in the 3-meter springboard and 10-meter platform events. Additionally, Louganis swept the 3-meter springboard and 10-meter platform events at three consecutive Pan American Games (1979 held in San Juan, 1983 in Caracas and 1987 in Indianapolis). He also won a total of five gold medals at three World Championships in the aforementioned diving events.
Since his professional diving days, Louganis has worked as an actor and coach and has appeared in Off-Broadway plays, movies such as Touch Me and Watercolors and tv show including Entourage and Portlandia. He has also been a prominent HIV awareness and gay rights activist and has been involved with the Human Rights Campaign, which helps defend civil liberties of those living with HIV/AIDS and the LGBT community.
