Janet Evans won a total of four gold medals at the 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympics. She won three gold medals at the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, South Korea in the 400, 800 and 1500-meter races and established a new world record in the 400-meter race, a mark that stood for 18 years until the record was broken in 2006 by Laure Manaudou. Over the course of her career, Evans held a total of seven world records.

Aside from the Olympics, Evens won 12 races in the 400 and 800 meter distances at the U.S. National Championships over the course of her career, the most ever won by an individual. Evans won a total of 45 American titles, trailing only Michael Phelps and Tracy Caulkins. In recognition of her achievements, Evans became a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2001.

Evans was born on August 28, 1971 in Fullerton, California and went to college at Stanford, where she won the Honda Sports Award as the top female swimmer in 1988-1989. She later went to the University of Texas before graduating from USC. In 1989, Evans was recognized as the best amateur athlete in the country when she won the Sullivan Award and was three times named by Swimming World Magazine as the Female World Swimmer of the Year.

In 2018, Evans was named the Chief Athlete Officer for the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games. A successful motivational speaker, Evans speaks around the country on such topics as leadership, peak performance, teamwork and excellence.
