Kerry Wood is a retired MLB pitcher who played 14 years professionally from 1998-2012 with the Chicago Cubs (1998, 2000-08, 2011-2012), Cleveland Indians (2009-2010) and New York Yankees (2010). In 1998 as a rookie, Wood finished the year with a 13-6 record, earning him N.L. Rookie of the Year honors. Also notable that year was his 20-strikeout performance in just his fifth career start, which tied a MLB record for most strikeouts in a nine-inning game.

Wood missed the entirety of what would have been his sophomore campaign in 1999 due to Tommy John surgery, but came back strong and in 2003 was named an All-Star. That season, he registered a career-high and MLB-leading 266 strikeouts, went 14-11 and posted an ERA of 3.20. The Cubs made it as far as the NLCS, where Wood won two games before losing to the eventual World Series champion Florida Marlins.

The 2008 season saw Wood earn his second trip to the All-Star game. He went 5-4 with a 3.26 ERA during his 10th year in baseball. Wood retired in May of 2012 with a career 86-75 record, ERA of 3.67 and 1,582 strikeouts. He holds the MLB records as the fastest player, in both innings and appearances, to reach 1,000 career strikeouts. Off the field, Wood was known for hosting a celebrity bowling tournament entitled Kerry Wood’s Strike Zone, which raised over $2 million for charities.
