Ryne Sandberg, nicknamed "Ryno," is a former MLB second baseman. He played Major League Baseball for sixteen years (1981–1994 and 1996–1997) and spent nearly his entire career with the Chicago Cubs. He was named for relief pitcher Ryne Duren and is recognized as one of the best second basemen of his era. Sandberg was born on September 18, 1959 in Spokane, Washington. He attended North Central High School and was a three-star athlete. Sandberg was scheduled to play quarterback at Washington State before he decided to go the baseball route after being selected by Philadelphia in the 20th round of the 1978 baseball amateur draft. He made his MLB debut for the Phillies on September 2, 1981 before being traded to the Cubs in 1982.
