Laurie Hernandez is a two-time Olympic gymnastics medalist, winning gold and silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Hernandez, known for her exciting floor exercise routine, was nicknamed the “human emoji” for her facial expressions and artistry and grace on the balance beam.
Outside the Olympics, Hernandez won the Mirrorball Trophy on Season 23 of “Dancing with the Stars” and her first book - “I Got This: To Gold and Beyond” - became a New York Times best seller. In 2018, she released a children’s book with HarperCollins Childrens titled “She’s Got This”. Hernandez also has a line of clothing with JC Penney and her own “Lauriemoji” app.
Hernandez was the first US-born Latina to make the US team since 1984 as she is a second generation American (her grandparents are from Puerto Rico).
