Lee Smith is a former MLB pitcher who played 18 seasons from 1980-1997 with the Chicago Cubs (1980-1987), Boston Red Sox (1988-1990), St. Louis Cardinals (1990-1993), New York Yankees (1993), Baltimore Orioles (1994), California Angels (1995-1996), Cincinnati Reds (1996) and Montreal Expos (1997).
A 2019 inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Smith took the mound in 1,022 games, primarily as a relief pitcher, finishing his career with an ERA of 3.03 with 1,251 strikeouts and 478 saves. Smith held the all-time record for saves in MLB history from 1993-2006 until he was surpassed by San Diego’s Trevor Hoffman. One of the premiere relievers of the 1990s, Smith earned the Rolaids Relief Man Award three times in 1991, 1992 and 1994. He additionally was selected to seven All-Star games in 1983, 1987 and consecutive years from 1991-1995.
The 1991 season saw Smith set an NL record for saves with 47. For his efforts, he was the Cy Young Award runner-up that year to Atlanta’s Tom Glavine and finished eighth in MVP voting. The next season, in 1992, he again led the NL in saves, this time with 43, finishing fourth in Cy Young Award voting. Lee in 1994 led the NL in saves for a final time with 33, while in 1995 he posted 37. After his playing career, Smith served as a roving coach within the San Francisco Giants’ minor league system and also coached pitchers with the South Africa national baseball team at the 2006 World Baseball Classic.
