Mark Dantonio served as the head football coach at Michigan State from 2007-2019 and led the Spartans to two Big Ten Legends Division titles and three Big Ten championships. He twice was named Big Ten Coach of the Year, including in 2013 when Dantonio coached the team to its first-ever 13-win season that culminated with a win over Stanford in the Rose Bowl and a No. 3 season-ending ranking. In 2015, he became the first Big Ten coach to record at least 11 victories in five of six years. That year, the Spartans reached their first College Football Playoff as the No. 3 seed. He retired after the 2019 season as the winningest football coach in school history with a 114-57 record.
Prior to coaching at Michigan State, Dantonio was head coach at Cincinnati from 2004-2006. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at numerous colleges, including Ohio University, Purdue, Ohio State, Akron, Youngstown State and Michigan State. Dantonio grew up in Zanesville, Ohio and played college football at the University of South Carolina. He began his coaching career in 1980 as a graduate assistant at Ohio University and first coached in the Big Ten as a graduate assistant at Purdue in 1981. Among the notable coaches that Dantonio has coached under include Earle Bruce (Ohio State), Jim Tressel (Youngstown State), Glen Mason (Kansas) and Nick Saban (Michigan State).
