Mark Kelso is a retired NFL safety who played his entire career from 1986-1993 with the Buffalo Bills. During his time in Buffalo, the Bills advanced to four consecutive Super Bowls from 1990-1993 behind the likes of Kelso and future Hall of Famers Jim Kelly, Bruce Smith and Thurman Thomas. And while the team never won a title, Kelso was a staple of the Bills’ defense.
Kelso appeared with the Bills sparingly as a rookie in 1986 but quickly established himself as an excellent defensive player as evidenced in 1987 when he recorded six interceptions in only 12 games played while also nabbing a pair of fumble recoveries, one of which he returned for a touchdown. In 1988, Kelso started all 16 games for the Bills, recording a career-high seven interceptions. Kelso continued to showcase his nose for the ball as he notched another six interceptions in 1989 and seven in 1992, tying his career-high mark.
In 1993, Kelso was named the “Whizzer” White NFL Man of the Year in light of his work in the community. After his playing days, Kelso served as a color analyst for the Bills Radio Network from 2006-2019. He was born on July 23, 1963 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and played college football at William & Mary.
