Rulon Gardner won a gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 2000 Olympics by defeating Aleksandr Karelin in what’s considered one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history. Karelin was unbeaten in international matches for 13 years and had not given up a point in six years. Gardner also won a world championship in 2001 and bronze at the 2004 Olympics. Gardner was born in Afton, Wyoming and attended Star Valley High School, where he was a three-sport letterman in wrestling, football and track and field. He attended junior college at Ricks College where, as a sophomore, he won the NJNCAA national heavyweight wrestling division. He would later attend and graduate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In 2005, Gardner published his autobiography entitled “Never Stop Pushing: My Life from a Wyoming Farm to the Olympic Medals Stand”.
