Kevin McHale is a former NBA forward who played his entire career from 1980-1993 with the Boston Celtics. McHale became a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999 and was named an All-Star seven times in his career (1984, 1986-1991). He averaged 17.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game during his time in the league, proving to be an integral part along with such teammates as Hall of Famers Larry Bird and Robert Parish of the Celtics dynasty of the 1980s that captured NBA titles in 1981, 1984 and 1986.
McHale was used off the bench for much of his career and won back-to-back NBA Sixth Man of the Year honors in 1984 and 1985 for his impactful play as a reserve. Defense was also a pillar of McHale’s game, evidenced by his three consecutive NBA All-Defensive First Team selections (1986-1988). He similarly was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team three times (1983, 1989, 1990). McHale is a member of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team and his jersey #32 jersey was retired by Boston in 1994.
In college, McHale was a standout at Minnesota and the Golden Gophers also retired his jersey #44. Additionally, he was a 2006 inductee into the College Basketball Hall of Fame. Internationally, McHale won gold medals for the United States at the 1979 Pan American Games and that year’s Universiade. After his playing days, McHale served as head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves (2004-2005, 2008-2009) and Houston Rockets (2011-2016).
