Lolo Jones is a hurdler and bobsledder who achieved the rare feat of participating in both the Summer and Winter Olympics. She competed in the 100-meter hurdles at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Games, finishing seventh and fourth, respectively, and in bobsled at the 2014 Winter Games. As one of the top hurdlers in the world in 2008, Jones won a gold medal in the 100-meter hurdle competition at that year’s World Athletics Final along with the first of two world titles when she captured gold at the World Indoor Championships in the 60-meter hurdles. The 2010 hurdling season was a successful one for Jones as well when she won her second world title after setting an American record in the 60-meter hurdles at the World Indoor Championships. She additionally won silver at the Continental Cup. Turning her attention to bobsledding, in 2012 Jones was named to the U.S. team and in her first World Cup event, took silver with teammate Jazmine Fenlator. The next year in 2013, Jones won a gold medal at the FIBT World Championships. In 2014, she was chosen to compete as a member of the U.S. team at the Winter Olympics.
Jones was born in Des Moines, Iowa on August 5, 1982 and endured a difficult childhood. Her family was homeless for a time, living in the basement of a local Salvation Army church, and Jones over eight years went to eight different schools. When her family moved away from Des Moines, Jones remained and lived with several different families so that she pursuit her athletic dreams and attend Theodore Roosevelt High School. Behind the support of the local community and Jones’ hard work, she not only excelled on the track – she was named by Gatorade as the Midwest Athlete of the Year - but went on to earn college degrees in Spanish and economics from Louisiana State University (LSU). In 2003 while in college, Jones captured the 60-meter hurdles title at the NCAA Indoor Championships and was a member of the 4x100-meter relay championship team at the 2003 and 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships. In the latter year, Jones was also the winner of the 100-meter hurdles at the SEC Championships, NCAA Mideast Region Championships and Penn Relays. In total during her time at LSU, Jones was an SEC Champion six times and named All-American 11 times.
Away from competition, Jones has appeared on “Dancing with the Stars”, “Whose Line is it Anyway”, “Celebrity Big Brother” and MTV’s “The Challenge: Champs vs. Pros”. She started the Lolo Jones Foundation to inspire and empower people who struggle with hardships such as poverty and incarceration through community initiatives and programs. In 2021, Jones authored a book titled “Over It: How to Face Life’s Hurdles with Grit, Hustle, and Grace”.
