Summer Sanders won four medals – two gold, one silver and one bronze - in swimming at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. The gold medals came in the 200 meter butterfly and 4x100 meter medley relay. Prior to the Olympics in 1991, Sanders claimed one gold and two silver medals at the World Championships. She also became the first American female swimmer since 1976 (Shirley Babashoff) to quality to compete in four individual Olympic events.
Sanders was also an 8-time US National champion and, during her time at Stanford, won 9 NCAA titles. She helped led the Cardinal to a NCAA Championship and was named NCAA Swimmer of the Year in back-to-back years. Sanders has received numerous honors for her achievements, including induction into the United States Swimming Hall of Fame, Stanford Hall of Fame and Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. In 1996, she was named by UNICEF as a Special Ambassador for Sports.
Sanders has also enjoyed a successful career in broadcasting. She served as a host and analyst for NBC on several Olympics beginning in 1996. She was also co-host of NBA Inside Stuff for 8 years and has hosted others shows for Nickelodeon, MTV, NBA TV, Fox, HLN and Yahoo! Sports. Additionally, Sanders has worked as a correspondent for Rachel Ray and Good Morning America and appeared in two movies, Jerry Maguire and Broken Record. In 1999, Sanders released a book titled “Champions Are Raised, Not Born: How My Parents Made Me a Success”.
