Dan Jansen Booking Agent Details
Dan Jansen is a retired speed skater who was a two-time World Sprint Champion and won a gold medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics. In 1988, he won the first of his World Sprint Championships and entered the Olympics as a favorite for both the 500-meter and 1,000-meter events. On the day of the 500-meter race, Jansen was notified that his 27-year old sister had died of leukemia. Jansen competed in the race but fell around the first turn. Four days later in the 1000-meter race, he also fell. Although Jansen did not win any medals, he received the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award.
In 1994, Jansen won the second of his World Sprint Championships and that summer won Olympic gold in the 1,000-meter race and set a world record. Jansen was selected by his fellow American Olympians to carry the U.S. flag at the closing ceremony. That year, he also received the Sullivan Award as the national’s top amateur athlete and, in 1995, was elected into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2004, Jansen was inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame.
Jansen graduated from West Allis Central High School in Wisconsin and set a junior speed skating record in the 500-meters at the age of 16. After retiring from competition, he served as the skating coach for the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks and did broadcast work for NBC Sports on its speed skating coverage. He also established the Dan Jansen Foundation in memory of his sister.
