Ward Burton is a former professional NASCAR driver who competed from 1990-2007. Burton competed in 375 total races within the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, notably winning the 2001 Southern 500 and 2002 Daytona 500. In 1995, his second year competing on the Cup Series, he won his first major race when he claimed victory at that season’s AC Delco 400. The 2002 season also saw him emerge victorious when he won the New England 300 in New Hampshire. In total during his 13 years competing in the Cup Series, Burton won five races, recorded 82 top ten finishes and earned seven poles.
During his NASCAR Xfinity Cup career, Burton had four wins, starting with the 1992 Goodwrench 200, along with 50 top 10 finishes and seven poles. He also competed in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoor Truck Series. Late in his career, Burton was appointed by Virginia’s governor to the state’s Board of Game and Inland Fisheries. He was awarded the Virginia Governor's Environmental Excellence Award in 2008 and also founded the Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation, an environmental conservation non-profit. Burton was born on October 25, 1961 in Danville, Virginia. He is the older brother of former NASCAR driver Jeff Burton and father of Jeb Burton.
