Ryan Leaf is a retired quarterback who played collegiately at Washington State and in the NFL for the San Diego Chargers and Dallas Cowboys. Leaf was born on May 15, 1976 in Great Falls, Montana. He went to Charles M. Russell High School, where he led the team to the 1982 state title before moving several hundred miles west to play college football.
Considered one of the greatest players in Washington State history, in 1997 Leaf led the school to its first-ever Pac-10 title and a berth in the Rose Bowl, its first since 1931. That season, he threw for an average of 330.6 yards in the air per game along with 33 touchdowns, a conference record at the time. For his efforts, he was named a Heisman Trophy Finalist (finishing third behind Peyton Manning and Charles Woodson) along with being named a first-team All-American and Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year.
After his junior year, Leaf entered the NFL draft in 1998 and was picked by San Diego with the 2nd overall selection behind Manning. Leaf played for the Chargers for two seasons before finishing his playing career in Dallas in 2001. After retiring, he coached the quarterbacks at West Texas A&M from 2006-2008.
Leaf’s off-the-field issues with his opiod addiction are well chronicled and came to a head when he spent 32 months in jail after being convicted of drug possession and burglary. Upon release from prison, Leaf turned his life around, serving as a program ambassador for Transcend Recovery Community and traveling across the United States telling his story in the hopes that he might be able to help others who are struggling. He also works as a college football analyst for ESPN.
