Steve Smith played wide receiver in the NFL from 2001-2016, primarily with the Carolina Panthers (2001-2013) and later the Baltimore Ravens (2014-2016). Smith caught 1,031 passes over the course of his career for 14,731 yards and 81 touchdowns and, at the time of his retirement, held most Panthers’ franchise career receiving records, including receptions, yards receiving and receiving touchdowns. He was five times named to the Pro Bowl and twice earned first-team All-Pro honors. Smith became a member of the Panthers Hall of Honor in 2019 and was inducted alongside other Panthers’ legends Wesley Walls, Jordan Gross and Jake Delhomme.
After breaking his leg in 2004 and being lost for the majority of the season, Smith bounced back with a purpose in 2005, setting career-highs in receptions (103), receiving yards (1,563) and touchdowns (12), leading the NFL in each category in route to capturing a receiving Triple Crown. For his efforts, he was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year. From 2005-2008, Smith recorded no less than 78 receptions and 1,002 yards. In total, he produced eight seasons in which he recorded more than 1,000 yards of receiving.
Born on May 12, 1979 in Los Angeles, California, Smith played college football at Utah and earned first-team All-Mountain West honors in 1999. He was picked by Carolina in the 3rd round of the 2001 NFL Draft. Smith has long been active in the community, including working with the Samaritan Feet organization to give away shoes to the homeless.
