The most accomplished American male short track speed skater in history, Apolo Ohno represented the United States at three Olympics, winning a total of eight medals, His medal count is the most all-time by any American athlete at the Winter Games. At the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Ohno won a gold in the 1,500 meter competition and silver in the 1000 meter event. Ohno won an additional three medals for the U.S. at the next Olympics Games in 2006, held in Turin, as he placed first in the 500 meter event and won two bronze medals in the 5,000 meter relay and 1,000 meter race. Ohno’s final Olympics came at the 2010 Games in Vancouver, where he won a silver medal in the 1,500 meters and two final bronze medals in the 500 meter relay and 1,000 meters. In 2019, he became a member of the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame.
Ohno buttressed his Olympic success with a total of 21 medals (8 gold, 7 silver, 6 bronze) captured at seven World Championships between 1999 and 2009. He won three overall World Cup titles (2001, 2003 and 2005) and became the first American to achieve the feat when he captured his first title in 2001. He also claimed gold at both the World Team Championships (2008) and World Junior Championships (1999). In October of 2003 and March of 2008, Ohno was named the Male Athlete of the Month by the U.S. Olympic Committee. He earned U.S. Speedskating Athlete of the Year accolades additionally in 2003 and was a three-time finalist for the Sullivan Award, handed to the top amateur athlete in the U.S.
After his racing career ended, Ohno worked for NBC as an analyst at the 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics. Off the ice, Ohno has been involved with many philanthropic causes that have included support of the Ronald McDonald House, The Salvation Army, Special Olympics and The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. He also served as host of the GSN’s “Minute to Win It”, won “Dancing With the Stars” in 2007 and guest-starred on the tv series “Hawaii Five-0”. In 2011, he authored the book “Zero Regrets: Be Greater Than Yesterday.” Ohno was born on May 22, 1982 in Seattle, Washington.
