The Kansas City Royals compete in Major League Baseball’s American League Central division along with the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox. The Royals began play as an expansion team in 1969 along with the Seattle Pilots and was founded by local businessman Ewing Kauffman. They have played their home games at Kauffman Stadium since 1973. Prior to that, the Royals played at Municipal Stadium from 1969-72.
The Royals have played in four World Series and won two, in 1985 by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-3, and in 2015 by defeating the New York Mets, 4-1. Bret Saberhagen was MVP in 1985 and Salvador Perez was MVP in 2015. In 2015, the Royals became the first team since the Oakland A’s in 1989 to win a World Series after losing the previous year.
