The Detroit Tigers compete in Major League Baseball’s American League Central division along with the Minnesota Twins, Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals. The Tigers began play in 1901 as one of the American League’s eight charter franchises. The Tigers are the oldest one city, one name team in the American League. They have played their home games at Comerica Park since 2000. Prior to that, they played at Tiger Stadium – previously known as Briggs Stadium and Navin Field - from 1912 – 1999.
The Tigers have won four World Series, in 1935, 1945, 1968 and 1984. In 1984, they defeated the San Diego Padres in five games, 4-1. Sparky Anderson was the manager and Alan Trammell was the MVP.
