The Pittsburgh Pirates compete in Major League Baseball’s National League Central division along with the St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds. The Pirates began play in 1881 as the Pittsburgh Alleghenys and joined the National League in 1887. They played in the inaugural World Series in 1903. The Pirates have played their home games at PNC Park since 2001. They previously played at Three Rivers Stadium and Forbes Field.
The Pirates have won five World Series, including one of the most memorable ever when Bill Mazeroski hit a game-winning, walk-off home run in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series against the New York Yankees, the only time in history that Game 7 of a World Series has ended with a home run. The Pirates also won the World Series in 1971 with Roberto Clemente and the 1979 World Series with Willie Stargell.
