Bill Lee, affectionately known as “Spaceman”, pitched in the majors from 1969-1982, mainly with the Boston Red Sox (1969-1979) and later the Montreal Expos (1979-1982). He is the Boston all-time record holder for games pitched by a lefty and became a member of the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2008.
Lee made his debut in the majors on June 25, 1969 and compiled a 119-90 overall record during his career along with an ERA of 3.62 and 713 strikeouts. Lee began his career primarily as a relief pitcher and, in 1971, went 9-2 with a 2.74 ERA in 47 appearances for Boston. He transitioned to a starting pitcher in 1973 and immediately found success, going 17-11 with an ERA of 2.75 and a roster spot in the All-Star Game. Lee continued to start for the Red Sox over the next few seasons, winning 17 games in each season from 1973-1975. The latter season Lee finished in the Top 25 in A.L. MVP voting and helped the Red Sox advance to the World Series.
In 1979, upon joining the Montreal Expos, Lee won 16 games, winning National League Left Hander of the Year honors from the Sporting News. After his MLB career ended, Lee remained active in baseball, appearing in numerous other leagues including the Senior Professional Baseball Association and Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, where in 2010 he became the oldest person to win a professional baseball game when he notched a win after going 5 2/3 innings for the Brockton Rox. He’s authored four books and was the main subject of a 2016 feature film entitled “Spaceman”.
