DeAngelo Williams enjoyed a successful 11-year career as a running back in the NFL from 2006-2016. He played primarily for the Carolina Panthers (2006-2014) and later the Pittsburgh Steelers (2015-2016). Williams was selected by Carolina in the first round (27th overall) in the 2006 NFL Draft out of the U. of Memphis. After playing in 29 games for the Panthers in 2006 and 2007 — of which he started five — Williams slid into Carolina’s starting tailback role starting in 2008. That season, he set career-highs in rush attempts (273), yards (1,515), yards per carry (5.5) and touchdowns (18), the latter number of which was an NFL-best and led to his being named second-team All-Pro. Williams produced another strong campaign in 2009, amassing 1,117 on the ground for an per carry average of 5.2 yards in route to earning his first Pro Bowl selection.
After signing with Pittsburgh in 2015, Williams rushed for 907 yards and also was active in Pittsburgh’s passing game, catching 40 passes for 367 yards. Williams again led the league in touchdowns (11) and posted his most rushing yards since 2009. During his time in college at Memphis, Williams earned three consecutive Conference-USA Offensive Player of the Year awards from 2003-2005. As a senior in 2005, he earned first-team All-American honors and left the school ranked 6th all-time on the NCAA rushing list. Off the field, Williams started the DeAngelo Williams Foundation to raise funds for research and preventative care in the fight against breast cancer. Having lost his mother and several other family members to the disease, the foundation has provided women access to over 500 mammograms at no cost.
